What Are You Tolerating?

Well, isn’t that a loaded question? What are you tolerating, really? I’m not talking about just your unbearable cranky neighbor, or that little issue of an unfulfilling career. What about the broken screen door that irritates you each time you go into the back yard, or the disorganized coat closet that rains clutter down on your head everytime you look for an umbrella? Even little things that you tolerate, can add up to a lot of unneccesary stress in your life.
So, what can you do about it? I know, I can hear your mind spinning a big web of excuses while I type. "I can’t even get to work on time, or eat a proper dinner, or get a full night’s rest. How in the world am I supposed to find time to clean out the garage?"
Tolerations (also called incompletions) are things that you are tolerating on a day to day basis, either knowingly or unknowingly, that over time drain your energy. Tolerations, like beauty, are in the eye of the beholder. While my cranky lake neighbor might be your best friend, he really can over time zap my energy, if I let him. Putting up with that squeaky door, peeling paint, stacked bills, or extra ten pounds can create negative living patterns that make it difficult to live your best life.
I like to organize tolerations into the following catagories: physical environment, relationships, finances, body, mind and spirit. Take a note pad and make a heading for each catagory. Go through your home, car, yard and write down anything that is even slightly off from the way that you want it. Anything is fair game! Next, take a look at each catagory and make lists so that you can create a plan to eliminate them.
This process can seem overwhelming at first. It helps to work with a coach or friend to keep you organized and on task. Give yourself enough time to systematically tackle each toleration. Rank each item and begin with the ones that irritate you the most. One by one, you’ll gain momentum as you eliminate them. And soon, you’ll become empowered by it, and be able to spot and eliminate them before they take up residency.

I’m off to find my unbrella….
